The answer key never reaches the student
A quiz can be opened with its questions and each question's options. Whoever runs the quiz sees all of it, and for a student the correct answer, the list of acceptable answers and the explanation are stripped from every question first.
How it is done today
Questions and answers come from the same place, so a mistake sends the answers to the student along with the paper. Looking inside a browser is not hard, and once the answers leak the whole quiz is worthless.
How it works

Open the quiz
Opening a quiz returns its questions, each of them with its own options already attached rather than fetched separately.

Who is looking is resolved first
Somebody who can run the quiz sees all of it. For anyone else, their enrolment in one of the quiz's classrooms is checked first.

The answer key is removed
Without the full view, the correct answer, the acceptable answers and the explanation are dropped from every question before it is sent.

Option flags go too
Which option is the correct one is also removed from each option, so the answer cannot be worked out from the options themselves.

Frequently asked questions
What does somebody without access see?
That the quiz was not found, rather than that they lack permission. Guessing at addresses therefore reveals nothing about which quizzes exist.
Who can open a quiz shared by link?
A published quiz with a share link can be opened by anybody holding it, but only in the same limited form a student sees, with no enrolment needed.
Are the explanations stripped as well?
Yes. Explanations go with the correct answers, because reading an explanation often gives the answer away just as plainly.
