Knowing which marks to check first
Each question's mark arrives with the reasoning behind it and a measure of how reliable it is. What matters is where that measure comes from: it is derived from outside verification, not taken from the model's own account of itself.
How it is done today
Checking every mark across a hundred scripts with equal attention is neither possible nor necessary. The difficulty is knowing which ones to check. So the teacher either reads all of them, saving no time, or samples at random and misses the one mark that was actually doubtful.

How reliable a mark is does not come from the model's own claim. It is derived from checking the mark against the rubric.

A mark whose band does not line up with the rubric cannot come back wearing high confidence. Verification runs first, confidence after.

Frequently asked questions
Is the model's own certainty used?
No, deliberately not. Across four runs of a real script its self-reported certainty was always at maximum, including on its own worst mark. So that number is not used.
Where does the confidence come from then?
From outside verification. It is derived from whether the mark's band lines up with the rubric, together with the state of the run, and only after that check has happened.
Does low confidence mean the mark is wrong?
No. It means the mark is worth reading first, not that it is wrong. Having read it, the teacher may keep it exactly as it is.
Is handwriting-reading accuracy reported too?
No. The confidence here is about the marking, not about reading the handwriting. We make no claim to a transcription accuracy figure today.
