No scrolling back through messages for the instructions
When a student opens an assignment to hand work in, the top of the page shows its title, which teacher set it and when it is due, with the teacher's full instructions underneath. If a rubric was written, that is there too, so the marks for each part are known before anyone starts.
How it is done today
Instructions are given aloud in class and summarised in two lines in the group. A student who was absent does not know the word count or which chapter it covers. They work from what a friend remembers, and only learn the brief was different when the mark comes back low.

Open the assignment
Press it in the classroom's assessment list or on your own assignments page. The page for handing work in opens.

Read the header
The top of the page carries the title, the teacher who set it and the due date, so how much time is left is clear immediately.

Read the instructions
Below that sit the teacher's full instructions: which chapter, how many words, what has to be shown. Any files they attached are in the same place.

Check the rubric
Where a rubric was written, it shows what each part is worth. Reading it before starting makes it clear where the effort should go.

On the page itself, as 'Attempt 2 of 3'. Once the limit is reached the page says so and no further submission is accepted.
Can I tell in advance what a late submission costs?
Yes. If the teacher set a late penalty it is shown on the page, and a submission after the due date is marked late.
