You do not have to start every submission from nothing
A teacher opens an assignment's submission list in a classroom and sends a submission for AI grading from the evaluation panel. Only a submission with a file attached can be sent. Progress is shown in the panel while the job runs, and when it finishes the panel reports that suggested scores are ready to review.
How it is done today
Opening every submission in a class and setting a score against each criterion is long work, and the attention it needs has usually run out well before the pile has. Two answers of the same standard end up with different marks, and the explanation of why a student got what they got is the first thing to go.
How it works

Open the submission in the evaluation panel
Go to the submission list from the assignment in your classroom and pick the student whose work you want to look at. The evaluation panel opens alongside it.

Check the submission has a file attached
The AI grading action is offered only when the submission carries a file such as a PDF or an image. With nothing attached, the action does not appear in the panel at all.

Start AI grading
Taking the action at the top of the panel starts the job. The panel shows which stage it has reached while it runs, and reports the reason if it stops before finishing.

Review the suggested scores
When the job finishes, the panel tells you the suggested scores are ready to review. Each criterion's score and the written feedback can be changed right there.

Finalise the grade yourself
Finalising is a separate step. The score and the feedback reach the student's results only once you have finalised them yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Does AI grading work on typed answers with no file?
No. The action is offered only on submissions that have a file attached. A submission with nothing attached is marked by the teacher in the usual way.
Are the marks recorded when the job finishes?
They arrive as suggestions, not as recorded marks. The panel reports that suggested scores are ready to review, and nothing reaches the student until the teacher finalises the grade.
What happens if the job fails?
The panel shows that it failed and gives the reason it reported. The teacher can start it again from the same place, or simply mark the submission by hand instead.
Can the same submission be sent more than once?
It can be started again from the panel. Each run counts as a separate job, though, so it is worth being deliberate rather than rerunning it out of habit.
