You find out the link is dead first

The link in the password recovery email opens the page for setting a new password. The password is typed twice so that a mistyping is caught before anything is saved, and once it is saved a route through to the sign-in page is offered.

How it is done today

Follow a stale or broken reset link in most software and you get a blank form. You only discover nothing happened after typing a password and submitting it.

How it works

  1. 1

Follow the link in the email

Tap the link in the password recovery email. It takes you straight to the right page.

  2. 2

See whether the link still works

A stale or broken link says so in place of the form, with a way to start the recovery again.

  3. 3

    Type the new password twice

The same password goes in both fields, so a mistyping is caught before anything is submitted.

  4. 4

    Go to the sign-in page

Once it is saved you are offered a route to sign in, where the new password works straight away.

Frequently asked questions

What if the link has expired?

Instead of the password fields you get a clear message that the link no longer works, with a way to start again.

Why type the password twice?

So a mistyping is caught before it is submitted. Otherwise the password that gets saved is one you cannot reproduce.

Do I come here if I used a code on my phone?

No. On the phone route the new password is set on the same screen as the code, without a separate page.
