The path is open with or without an email
Opening an account takes a name, either an email or a phone number, and a password. Signing in uses the same identity, and Google is offered alongside it. A forgotten password can be recovered by a link sent to an email or by a code sent to a phone.

- A phone number is enough
A name, either an email address or a phone number, and a password is all it takes to open an account. You are never asked for both identifiers.
- Sign in with whatever you signed up with
Sign in with whichever identifier you opened the account with, an email or a phone number, and your password. There is no separate username to recall.
- A way in that skips the password
Anybody with a Google account can sign in with a single tap instead of a password. It is one route among several, rather than a requirement for anybody.
- No email is not a lost account
Give an email and a link arrives; give a phone number and a code arrives, with the new password set on that same screen. No email is needed.
- You find out the link is dead first
Follow the link from the recovery email and set a new password. A link that has gone stale says so plainly, instead of showing you an empty form.
- A temporary password is not meant to last
When an administrator resets a password or opens an account for somebody, that person is asked to set one of their own at their next sign-in.
Frequently asked questions
Can an account be opened with a phone number?
Yes. Either an email or a phone number is enough to open an account; both are not required.
Is signing in with Google required?
No. Google is one option among others. An email or phone number with a password works perfectly well.
Where is signing in with an institution ID?
