Resetting a student's password
A teacher can reset the password of a student in one of their own classrooms. No password is set here. Instead the student is made to choose a new one the next time they sign in, so nobody but the student knows what it ends up being.
How it is done today
Setting a password for a student who forgot theirs gets them back in, but now the teacher knows it, and so does the friend sitting next to them. A whole class ends up with near-identical passwords, and there is no telling who is really sitting the quiz.

A student of yours
The system first checks the student is enrolled in one of your classrooms. If not, nothing happens and the reason is given.

Reset, not set
There is no password to type here. The reset simply means the old password no longer works.

The student chooses
The next time they sign in, the student is asked to choose a new password, and cannot get past that until they do.

The teacher never knows it
Because the student picks it themselves, the teacher never sees the new password. The account belongs to the student alone again.

Frequently asked questions
Is resetting the same as setting a password?
No, they are two different actions. Setting means the teacher chooses a password and the student carries on with it. Resetting means the teacher chooses nothing and the student picks their own.
Does the student get a link or a code?
No. Nothing is emailed or texted on this action, and there is no reset link. The student is simply asked to choose a new password the next time they sign in.
Can the teacher see the new password?
No. The student chooses it themselves, so it is never shown to the teacher. That is exactly how the shared-password problem is avoided.
Can a student from another class be reset?
No. The student has to be enrolled in one of your own classrooms. A teacher with no classrooms at all cannot reset anybody's password.
