Choosing recipients: people or whole classes
In the SMS composer, typing part of a name or a phone number brings back matching active members of your institution with their role and number. Classes can be picked instead, and each one shows how many active students are currently enrolled in it.
How it is done today
Every SMS costs money, so sending to the wrong list is money gone. Typing numbers in by hand gets a digit wrong sooner or later, and choosing a whole batch without knowing how many people are in it means the bill is a surprise.
How it works

Name or number, whichever you remember
The search term is matched against both the name and the phone number, so a parent can be found by their number when the name will not come to mind.

Active members of your institution
Only active members of your own institution come back. People from outside it and deactivated accounts do not appear in the results.

Missing numbers are visible
Somebody with no phone number on file still appears, marked as having none, rather than quietly dropping out of the results.

Whole classes too
Instead of picking people one by one you can pick a classroom, and type part of its title to find it among the rest.

See the reach before sending
Each class carries the number of students actively enrolled in it, so the size of the send is clear before anything goes out.

What happens automatically
The count beside each class is worked out at search time from its current enrolments, not read from a stored figure.

Who the message finally goes to is chosen by the admin. Appearing in the search does not put anybody on the list.

Frequently asked questions
Can you search by email?
No. This search runs over names and phone numbers, because a number is what sending an SMS needs. Searching by email is done from the member list pages instead.
What about somebody with no number on file?
No number means no SMS. They still show up in the results marked as having none, so the gap is visible while you are building the list and the number can be added.
Is the class figure current?
Yes. It is counted from that classroom's active enrolments as the search runs, so somebody added or removed yesterday is already reflected in it.
