See the rules before the quiz starts, not after
In ClassTablet a student opens a quiz from their classroom and sees an intro screen first: the time limit, how many questions there are, how many attempts they get and the teacher's instructions. Pressing start opens an attempt and runs a timer at the top of the page.
How it is done today
In a paper exam the teacher reads out the rules while standing at the front. Move it online and those rules end up in a group message, so a student only discovers the time limit or the number of attempts after starting. That is where the complaints come from: someone starts at the wrong moment, or runs out of time without realising there was one.
How it works

Open the quiz from the classroom
A student opens the quiz from the list in their own classroom. It does not appear in that list until the teacher has published it.

Read the intro screen
It shows the time limit, the number of questions, how many attempts are allowed and whatever instructions the teacher wrote, with small status tags for where the quiz stands.

Wait if it has not opened yet
If the quiz has an opening time, it cannot be started before then. Instead a countdown shows how long until it opens, and the button becomes usable by itself when the time arrives.

Starting opens an attempt and the questions begin. Where there is a time limit, a timer runs at the top of the page, so how much is left stays in view the whole way through.

Frequently asked questions
Can a student take the same quiz more than once?
That is the teacher's choice. A maximum number of attempts is set when the quiz is built, and the student sees that number on the intro screen before they start.
What if the internet drops mid-quiz?
The attempt stays in progress, so the student comes back to the same one instead of starting again, and the answers they already gave are still there.
Can a teacher see the quiz as a student would?
Yes. A teacher opening the quiz sees exactly what students will see, but it runs as a preview and no attempt is stored, so it does not affect the results.
Can students take a quiz on a phone?
Yes. A student opens ClassTablet in the phone's browser and takes the quiz there, with nothing to install. The timer and the questions work on a small screen.
