Setting a student's password directly
When a student cannot get into their account, their teacher can choose a new password and set it directly. The student signs in with it and is not asked to pick another one. A teacher can only do this for students in their own classrooms.
How it is done today
Halfway through a class a student says they cannot sign in. They have no email of their own, just a parent's number, and nobody knows where a reset link would even go. That one problem stops the whole class, and the student misses the quiz or assignment set for that day.
How it works

Pick the student
Open the student from your own class list. The same action on a student from another class is refused, and the reason is spelled out rather than failing quietly.

Type the password twice
The new password is typed twice and the two have to match. At least six characters are required, so a typo cannot leave a password nobody knows.

The student can sign in at once
As soon as it is saved the student can sign in with that password, and they are not made to choose a different one on the way in.

You pass it on yourself
The new password is not emailed or texted anywhere. The teacher tells the student directly, so who knows it stays under the teacher's control.

Frequently asked questions
Can any teacher set any student's password?
No. A teacher can only do this for students enrolled in their own classrooms. Trying it on anyone else fails, and the reason is stated clearly rather than left vague.
Does the student get the new password by text?
No. Nothing is emailed or texted on this action. The teacher passes the password to the student themselves, usually by simply telling them at the time.
Is the student asked to choose a new one after signing in?
Not on this route. The student can carry on with the password the teacher set. There is a separate action for forcing a student to choose their own.
How long does the password have to be?
At least six characters, and the two boxes have to match. We do not claim any further requirement for capitals or special characters.
