Where the application stands after paying
Coming back from the payment gateway, the page checks the application's state every few seconds until it settles as enrolled or waitlisted. A gateway saying the payment succeeded is not enough on its own: until the enrolment is recorded, the page keeps saying it is still confirming.
How it is done today
Mobile banking takes the money and prints success on the screen, but nothing has reached the institution's records yet. The student believes they are in, the office says they are not, and both sides argue with a receipt in hand. That gap is what generates most of the phone calls.

The page the gateway brings the applicant back to is where the application's state is shown, so there is nowhere else to go looking.

The page checks again every few seconds on its own, so the applicant does not have to keep pressing refresh or give up and walk away.

A success message from the gateway is not taken as proof. Until the enrolment is actually recorded, the page says it is still confirming.

Trying somebody else's submission id shows nothing, because the state is only ever readable by the student that application belongs to.

Frequently asked questions
Why does it still say confirming after paying?
The gateway taking the money and the enrolment being written into the institution's records are two separate steps. Until the second one happens the page tells the truth, because claiming a place and then withdrawing it would be worse.
Does closing the page stall the application?
No. The confirmation arriving and the state changing happen on the server whether or not the page is open. The page only reports the change; it does not cause it.
What shows if the payment was cancelled?
The page does not start checking at all, because there is nothing left to settle. Whichever happened, a cancellation or a failure, is shown directly instead.
