The class hears as soon as the deadline passes
Five minutes after the due time passes, ClassTablet tells the classroom on its own that the assignment is now overdue. The alert arrives as an in-app notification and a push alert on the phone. If every student in the class has submitted by then, no alert is sent at all.
How it is done today
Usually nobody says anything once a deadline has gone by. The student assumes it might still be open, and the teacher arrives at the next class having to work out by hand who never submitted. Both sides notice the delay far too late, by which point there is no time left to sort it out with a conversation.

The alert is queued for five minutes after the due time, not for the moment itself, so that submissions made right at the last minute are counted before anything is said.

Nothing is sent if the class is done
Just before sending, ClassTablet checks whether anyone in the class still has no submission. If nobody is outstanding the alert is dropped, so a class that finished on time is not warned for nothing.

The class is told
The alert goes to the classroom's students as a ClassTablet notification and a push alert, naming the assignment. A student can switch alerts of this kind off in their own settings.

The alert goes out once, not repeatedly. What to do about the students who did not submit is entirely the teacher's call; the system does not keep chasing anyone after that.

Does the alert keep repeating?
No. Each assignment gets one overdue alert, five minutes after its deadline passes. After that the system sends no further chasers and no second alert of its own accord.
Does the teacher get a separate alert?
This alert is for the classroom's students. The teacher sees where things stand on the assignment's own page, which shows who has submitted and who has not side by side.
