Stop the host link being passed around
When a teacher presses start, where they are sent is resolved on the server. A teacher assigned to that class goes in with host rights, and if the class is already running they are sent in as an ordinary participant instead.
How it is done today
Once a Zoom host link is in somebody's hands it spreads, and anyone holding it can walk in as host and end the class. Two teachers both launching as host is worse: the second one pushes the first out and drops everybody mid-lesson.

Press start on the class
Starting a class from the class list asks the server where to send you rather than following a link stored on the page.

Access is checked first
Before anything is requested from Zoom, the teacher's standing on that class is checked. Without it, no host rights are handed out.

The class opens in a new tab
The tab is opened on the click itself so the browser does not block it, and the address is loaded into that tab once it comes back.

Missing links are explained
If the class has no meeting link yet, or is waiting for a free Zoom host, that is said plainly rather than failing without a reason.

Frequently asked questions
What if two teachers start at once?
Whoever got there first stays host and the second goes in as a participant. The host can then promote them from inside the meeting.
Is the host link stored anywhere?
No. The address is resolved fresh each time, and the response is marked so that it is not cached and not leaked to another site as a referrer.
Does this work for Google Meet classes?
It does. For anything other than Zoom the class's stored link is returned, and when there is no link yet that is said plainly.
