Where your notifications live
Pressing the bell in the app shows your notifications, newest first. The list and the unread count come back in the same request, so what the badge says and what the list shows always match. You can also ask for only the read ones or only the unread ones.
How it is done today
A bell saying seven that opens onto three unread is how people stop trusting notifications altogether. And if the list and the count are fetched separately, one arriving late is enough to put two different numbers on the same screen.
How it works

It all hangs off the bell
Pressing the bell at the top of the app opens the panel and shows your notifications with the newest ones first.

List and count together
The unread count comes back in the same reply as the list, so the number on the badge cannot drift away from what is inside.

Read, unread or both
You can ask for the unread ones only, or the read ones only, and asking for neither returns both kinds together.

Priority changes the look
Every notice carries a priority, and that decides how the pop-up looks when one arrives and how long it stays on screen.

Nothing is fetched when signed out
With no session, the list is not requested at all, so a signed-out tab is not making calls it has no use for.

Frequently asked questions
How many notifications come back at once?
The screen asks for fifty. A request that names no size gets twenty, and further pages can be asked for after that, so older notices are still reachable.
Does every notice carry a link?
No. A View link appears on notices that have somewhere to go. The ones with nothing specific attached are simply there to be read.
Are the inbox and notifications the same thing?
Not quite. The bell panel carries notifications only, while the inbox mixes notifications with system alerts and message conversations in one list.
