Tapping a notice in the list marks it read, and the button at the bottom marks everything unread as read at once. Either way the new count is pushed straight to the screens you have open, so no tab is left showing a stale number.

With the same account open on a laptop and a phone, something read in one place still looks unread in the other. People end up opening the same notice twice, and after that nobody believes the number on the bell.

Frequently asked questions
Can a notice be made unread from here?
No, this route only sets read. Putting something back to unread is done from the inbox, where the item's menu offers that as an option.
Can somebody else's notification be marked?
No. The request looks only among your own notices, and another person's id reports not found, which also means a real id cannot be told from an invented one.
Does marking all read delete the notices?
No, they are only marked read. They stay in the list and can be read again later; the difference is that the unread count goes to zero.
