New notices arrive by themselves
While the app is open it holds a connection to the server, and anything new travels down it the moment it is raised. The notice joins the list, a message appears on screen at its priority and the bell count changes, none of which needs a page reload.
How it is done today
A cancelled class or a surprise quiz that only shows up after somebody refreshes has effectively arrived late. Asking the server every few seconds instead burns through a student's data and battery for nothing most of the time.
How it works

One open connection
Rather than asking repeatedly, the app holds one connection open and the server sends down anything new as it happens.

The unread count comes first
The count is the first thing sent when the connection opens, so the screen knows where it stands before anything new arrives.

Quiet until then
No arriving notice is shown until that first count has landed, so reconnecting cannot suddenly replay older notices as pop-ups.

It reconnects on its own
If the connection drops it tries again by itself, waiting a little longer after each failure and going back to the short wait once it succeeds.

Only while signed in
With no session the connection is not opened at all, so a signed-out tab is not holding one open for no reason.

Frequently asked questions
Do notices arrive when the app is closed?
This connection only serves an open page. We do not claim delivery to a phone's lock screen with the app closed; the notices wait in the list and are there when it is next opened.
Are notices lost if the connection drops?
No. Once it reconnects, the unread count arrives first and the list is fetched again, so anything raised while you were offline is still there in the list.
Does it use a lot of data?
Less than asking repeatedly would. The connection stays open, but data only travels when something actually happens, rather than empty requests going back and forth.
