Let students type your address to get in
An institution's administrator adds the domain from the domains section of settings. Adding it returns the DNS records that need to be created. The domain name itself is validated first, and a name in the wrong shape comes back with the reason rather than being accepted.
How it is done today
An institution wants to run the software under its own name, but the address it has to give students belongs to somebody else. Parents find it unfamiliar, and at admission time the address needs explaining before anyone will trust it.

Go to the domains section of settings
The institution's settings have a section for domains. The place to add one sits there.

Enter the domain
Type the address you want the software to run at. A name in the wrong shape is refused with the reason given.

Take the DNS records
Adding it returns the records that need creating. Those have to be set up wherever your domain is managed.

Check the status
The domain's current status can be read separately, so how far the setup has got is available whenever you want it.

Does the domain work as soon as I add it?
No. The DNS records returned when you add it have to be created wherever your domain is managed before the next step does anything.
