Check the code before you pay
Once a plan has been chosen, a promo code can be entered and checked. Where the code holds, what it takes off comes back and is subtracted from the total. Where it does not, the reason is given, and checking a code never uses it up.
How it is done today
Finding out whether a promo code worked only after paying means the full amount has already gone, and getting the difference back means writing to somebody, which is more trouble than the discount was worth.

Choose the plan first
A code cannot be checked before a plan is chosen, because there is no amount yet for a discount to come off.

Enter the code
The checkout step carries a field for a promo code. Type the code you have into that field.

Check it
Checking asks whether the code holds, and where it does, what it would take off comes back with the answer.

Read the new total
The discount is subtracted from the total, and a large discount never takes the total below zero.

What reasons are given when a code fails?
One of six: wrong code, switched off, not started yet, expired, usage limit reached, or already used by you.
Does checking a code use it up?
No. Checking only reports what would happen. Nothing is written against the code by asking the question.
Can a code be checked before choosing a plan?
No. Without a plan chosen, the request is not sent at all, because there is nothing to work a discount against.
