Open one notice and read it in full
Selecting a row opens that notice in full: a notification shows its whole message and who sent it, a conversation shows its participants and the messages so far. Opening it marks it read, and the unread count drops at the same moment rather than after a refresh.
How it is done today
The first few words in a list rarely say what is actually inside, so everything gets opened anyway. Having to then mark each one read as a separate action doubles the work, and because most people skip it, the unread count stops meaning anything.

Choosing an item from the list opens its detail in the panel beside it, so nothing navigates away to a separate page and back.

Frequently asked questions
Can somebody else's notice be read this way?
No. Fetching a notification's detail checks that it belongs to you, and if it does not, the reply says nothing was found. That also means a real id cannot be told apart from an invented one.
Can a notification carry attachments?
No. The attachments field on a notification detail comes back empty. Files only appear in a message conversation, where a reply can have them attached.
Can something opened by mistake be made unread?
Yes. The detail panel's menu has a mark-as-unread option, and using it puts the item back among the unread ones where you will see it again.
