Read it and answer it in one place
Open a message in the inbox and the reply goes from there, joining that same conversation. Files can go with it. Notifications, announcements and system alerts cannot be replied to at all, and attempting it is turned away: the reply is for messages only.

If answering means leaving the inbox for somewhere else, people decide to do it later, and later does not arrive, least of all for the one-line answers.
