Joining with just an email address
There is an email field at the foot of every page on the website. Sending an address adds you to the newsletter list with no account and no sign-in. An address already on the list is not added again; the form tells you that you are already subscribed.
How it is done today
Asking somebody to create an account before they can hear from you loses most of them, because they are not using the product yet. And if signing up twice meant getting everything twice, the sensible reaction is to leave the list altogether.

The field sits in the site's footer, and the footer is on every page, so there is no particular page to find first.

The request is accepted without a session, so somebody who does not use ClassTablet at all can still join the list.

The address is checked first
The address is validated before anything is stored, and one that is not a real email address is refused rather than kept.

Never added twice
An address already on the list adds nothing new, and the form reports that you are subscribed already rather than staying silent.

Information, not an error
Being subscribed already is shown as information rather than as a failure. An error message is kept for something that actually went wrong.
